Getting rid of performance appraisals

They say that an employee never forgets a bad review experience. Moreover, research has shown that all kinds of personal biases influence employee appraisals. That’s why we decided to completely get rid of annual performance evaluations.

Focusing on Real-Time Growth and Connection

Instead we focus on meaningful outcomes over processes with instant development where our managers coach their people all day, every day with positively constructed feedback. It’s best to focus on the present and the immediate future of our people rather than what he or she did in the past. Additionally, the CEO personally sets time aside once a month to go through the details of each and every client aspect of our business—from work-flow to employee challenges to client updates, finance, and operations. These meetings also help encourage interactions across teams, build collaboration with peers, and spark conversation about work as well as play. The design of these meetings allows our people to ask questions directly to the CEO about any number of company issues – even if their computer mouse is not working!

Shares Mirroring Ownership

Share ownership is widely considered as an effective way of boosting your people’s productivity and helping create a culture of ownership. When your employees own a stake in the company, their attitude towards business changes—and so does your bottom line.

Creating Ownership Without Shares

In our pursuit to provide a financially meaningful ownership scheme, we faced numerous challenges given the inadequate local laws for free transfer of shares. So we created an innovative shares-mirroring route designed to shadow the movement of dividends of actual Shares paid to the shareholders. Under the plan a set number of shares can be handed to our people every year which entitle the recipients to receive cash incentive calculated based on the annual profit-sharing amount and the cumulative net profit to be distributed to the actual shareholders. This helped our people (eligible under the plan) feel like an tributary owner of a significant asset and serve as a catalyst for growth. When you make your people feel like owners they value the opportunity and develop an ownership mindset – with an inherent incentive to grow your company and increase its profitability.

Each individual is unique and smart. A company would be mad to keep all that brain-power locked up. People in an organization should be allowed to set time aside and work on their own ideas with a skew towards the line of business and services which your company offers.

Vacation Recharge Days: Rest and Rejuvenation

We understand the importance of taking time to rest and recharge, which is why we offer a generous and flexible annual leave policy that grows with our people as they continue their journey with us.

Time Off That Grows With You

  • 3 months to 5 years of service: Enjoy 30 calendar days of leave each year to unwind and rejuvenate.

  • 61 months to 7 years of service: Your leave increases to 35 calendar days annually, giving you even more time to refresh.

  • 85 months to over 9 years of service: After 9 years, you’ll receive an enhanced leave of 38 calendar days per year as a reward for your long-term dedication.

This tiered structure reflects our commitment to supporting the well-being of our people, ensuring they have plenty of time to relax, recharge, and enjoy life outside of work.

3 Days Workweek: Fewer Days, Greater Productivity

Every employee desires to control his time. They covet opportunities that offer flexibility in getting work done in non-traditional settings while balancing the stress of being a family provider and maintaining a home.

Doing More with Less

In 2016, we started experimenting with a four-day workweek program to see how it pans out for our people. What we observed was that giving them the flexibility to choose a midweek break, a three-day weekend, or work from home with no commute helped them free up personal time in a meaningful way. Naturally, a four-day week schedule gives employees 52 extra days in each year, allowing them the freedom and flexibility to manage their work, recharge, and spend more time with their families. This flexi-scheme was formalized and officially incorporated in 2019 and has greatly helped us reduce stress and increase motivation and engagement. In 2024, we extended this flexibility even further, offering everyone the option to work from home for two days each week, providing even more balance between their personal and professional life. So, test it out at your organization in a limited trial basis and see if they are ready to do more with less!

Easing Back into Work: Half-Day Transition

Slipping back into work mode can be a challenge for many people. To help our people from undoing any benefits they may have received from taking a break we offer a half-day work on the first day of return.

Returning Gently, Recharging Fully

This helps get over the “back to work blues” and prepares them to get back into the game and positively deal with the pending tasks. By the second day, our people return with renewed energy and restored creativity, ready to take on their work with enthusiasm.

With levels of stress, anxiety, and depression increasing in the workplace, alternative methods are needed to create a healthy and supportive culture. At SRB, we consider spirituality more of a process than an end.

Reflecting, Recharging, Renewing Purpose

We help our people attain personal stability by giving them a ten-day paid spiritual retreat (I’tikaf) in a supportive setting. Our people see this period as the best time to silently contemplate, reflect, and build self-awareness of their spiritual surroundings. These spiritual retreats help people view their life and work as a spiritual path and renew their purpose in life, as well as attain a sense of peace and awareness of the Creator’s presence in both their corporate and personal lives. We hope our efforts help reduce stress, anxiety, and provide lasting lifestyle value.

Time off to Renew Spiritual Energy

The Prophet (peace be upon him) was known for fasting Mondays and Thursdays. He also recommended fasting on the days of Ahsura and Zul Hijja and increased his own fasting during the month of Sha’baan. We wanted our people to remain positive about fasting throughout the year and continue boosting their spirituality from the journey of one Ramadan to the next.

We decided to give our people 2 hours off for each day they fasted. The result? Apart from renewed energy and positivity, the entire team renewed their respect and trust in management for making such a facility available.

All businesses are desperately in need of God’s mercy. We strongly believe that an increase in obedience to God leads to an increase in wealth. Perhaps this is a reason why worldly benefits are mentioned alongside the benefits of acts of worship in several places in the Quran.

To inspire our people to worship God even more, we allow our people 10 paid minutes to observe Nawafil (Optional Prayers) anytime of the day. They are also allowed the same time off to sit and meditate on the remembrance of our Creator and purpose of life.
